Friday 15th November 7-9pm on Kennet Radio 106.7fm
This month on her Friday Social radio show on Kennet Radio, our MD Claire Burdett will be looking at what’s happening in the lead up to Christmas in West Berkshire.
Encompassing BBC Children in Need, which is happening on Friday itself, the Newbury Living Advent Calendar, the 118th Newbury Weekly News Over 80’s Christmas Parcel Appeal and the ever-popular Christmas Panto at the Newbury Corn Exchange.
Sleeping Beauty at The Newbury Corn Exchange
The much-loved pantomime at The Newbury Corn Exchange this year is Sleeping Beauty. This spell-binding production is full of songs to sing along to and stunning dance routines, plus plenty of magic and sparkle.
Fresh from final rehearsals , Claire will be joined in the studio by cast members Phil Elvy, Matt Grace, and Jay Alexandra Bennett. We will also be chatting to Writer and Director Adam Brown of Plested and Brown, a comedy theatre company comprising Clare Plested, Adam Brown and Amanda Wilsher, who have created numerous Edinburgh Fringe hits.
Newbury Weekly News Over 80s Parcel Appeal
Claire will also be talking to Dan Cooper and Jo Fulker at The Newbury Weekly News, about their annual Over 80s parcel appeal, which was started in 1897 by Frank Stillman, one of the Newbury Weekly News’ first editors.
Originally called ‘The Two Ts Fund’, the idea was to give a Christmas gift of tobacco and tea to the men and women of the day living in the town’s workhouse. Thankfully, the contents of the present-day Christmas gifts donated by the appeal are somewhat different!
However, the need is very much still present, with over 2,000 parcels delivered each year to elderly residents in West Berkshire.
Newbury’s 2019 Living Advent Calendar
Newbury’s First Living Advent Calendar in 2018 was inspired by an idea that began in Stockholm.
The clever and engaging ‘reveals’ were an immediate hit with Newbury residents, including Day 3’s “Barbie it’s Cold Outside’ Window, Day 5’s Paddington Bear at author Michael Bond’s childhood home in West Mills, and an Elvis tribute act in Gloucester Road!
This year they are repeating it and hoping to wow even more people!
Like a traditional children’s advent calendar, a newly decorated window or door will be unveiled by a local amenity, business or resident, who will ‘reveal’ a surprise festive treat.
The ‘reveal’ – which remain secret until the day and run for approximately 15 minutes – can include songs, dance, music, food, sketches, poetry as well as more bespoke entertainment, all with a festive twist.
The Living Advent Calendar runs 1st December to 24th December, and times do vary day to day. Find the schedule on their Facebook page.
And *NEWS ALERT* we at The Media Marketing Co will be taking part and tying it in with our Celebration Calendar on 9th December! And obviously you’ll have to attend or tune in online to see our very special Christmas ‘reveal’.
BBC Children in Need
Kennet Radio are holding an all-day ‘Radiothon’ on Friday 15th November in support of BBC Children in Need, hosted by Friday breakfast presenters Rusty and Bungle. They are aiming to raise over £1,000 for the charity.
Claire and the Friday Social show will be covering what the team have got up to during the day, local fundraising events, and the total raised so far.
Those running local Children In Need events are encouraged to contact the station via email: [email protected].
