This Friday on the Friday Social show on Kennet Radio at 7pm our MD Claire is presenting a ‘Silver Special’. She will be covering all things in the news at the moment that affect the older generation, including the change to the license fee and pensionable age, adult social care, and loneliness.
Claire and her guests will also discuss the recent report published by the House of Lords Economic Affairs Committee which recommended that the Government immediately spends £8 billion to restore social care to acceptable standards and then introduce free personal care over a period of 5 years.
Expert guests on the show include Alison Hesketh of TimeFinders, who are Senior Life Specialists offering practical and emotional support to older people and their families at times of change, as well as Jessamy Walker of Brown Dog Financial Planning a lifestyle financial specialist who specialises in retirement planning.
We also have Sandy Gilbert of Fair Close Centre the wonderful social centre for older people in Newbury and provider of meals on wheels, and Garry Poulson of Volunteer Centre West Berkshire who will be talking about the support available for older people in the community.
It would be great to have local views and experiences to shared with listeners, so if you are based in West Berkshire and any of these issues affect you or your family, or you have any questions you would like to ask any if our guests, please get in touch during the show on 01635 725725.
Update 24th July 2019 – additional information mentioned on the show.
The Pension Credit application number is 0800 991234 and the text phone (for hearing impaired people) is 0800 1 69 0133. Both numbers are free but you should probably get someone, such as the team at Volunteer Centre West Berkshire, to help you fill in the forms. Information is at www.gov.uk/pension-credit.
Also look at Attendance Allowance, which is NOT means tested but is available to anyone of pension age who needs a bit of extra help either during the day or at night. There is a higher rate for those who need help both day and night. Good information is available on the Government’s website https://www.gov.uk/attendance-allowance. Telephone: 0800 731 0122 Textphone: 0800 731 0317 NGT text relay (if you cannot hear or speak on the phone): 18001 then 0800 731 0122 Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm
Anyone living in residential care or receiving care at home should be applying for this and those struggling on their own should definitely apply. Again it is useful to get help to fill in these forms. There are consultants who offer, for a fee, to help people fill in Attendance Allowance forms but these should be avoided in favour of people like Garry’s and Sandy’s teams.
Silverline is www.thesilverline.com They have a free helpline 0800 479 8090 and can arrange to “buddy” a volunteer with a pensioner to make regular telephone calls etc.
